Innovation has been reshaping the payments landscape, leading to the rise of new payment methods: digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are increasingly used by consumers for online payments. New payment methods rely on traditional payment services (cards and credit transfers), resulting in new and complex relationships among operators active at different stages of the payments value chain.
The nature – horizontal and/or vertical – of the competitive relationship between digital wallets and established operators such as international card schemes is discussed in the insight available here.
This and other developments in competition in the online payment sector will be discussed in the workshop “Dai wallet digitali ai pagamenti biometrici: nuove dinamiche competitive nei pagamenti online,” which will be held in Milan on 9 April at Starhotels E.c.ho.
