The Competition Commission (UK) has published a study carried out by Lear, titled “The ex post evaluation of two merger decisions”. The study consists in an empirical evaluation of the effects of two merger decisions adopted by the CC in the retail sector. We employed the most advanced available econometric techniques for the ex-post evaluation of mergers, relying in particular on the use of difference-in-differences models. The study concludes that the decisions adopted by the CC were correct, as no substantial lessening of competition derived from the mergers.

The European Parliament has published a study undertaken by Lear on the barriers to competition in the provision of mortgage credit. The study considers barriers affecting both the supply and the demand side of the market and, based on the available evidence, it provides an assessment of the extent to which such barriers restrict competition in the mortgage market.

Cristiana Vitale has been invited to be a panellist at the OECD Competition Committee's Roundtable on the Impact Evaluation of Merger Decisions together with Professor Andrew Gavil of Howard University (Washington, DC) and Professor Oliver Budzinsky of the University of Southern Denmark.  The Roundtable will be held in Paris on 30 June 2011.

Lear has been selected to enter into a multiple framework service contract with the European Parliament's Committee. Lear will provide economic consultancy services on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Financial services, Taxation and Impact Assessment.

On May the 25th Lorenzo Ciari will present his work "Entry Decisions After Deregulation: the Role of Incumbents' Market Power" (with Riccardo De Bonis) at the Università Politecnica delle Marche, within the seminars cycle organized by the Money and Finance Research Group.

Paolo Buccirossi will participate at the III edition of the "Conferences on the Private Enforcement of Competition Law" to be hold in Trento on 15-16 April 2011. This year the topic will be: “Rimedi civilistici per illeciti anticoncorrenziali “.
Paolo will talk about the potential and the limitation of applying economic models to the calculation of damages. 

Lear entered a framework agreement with the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority of the Bahamas to provide professional services in the electronic communication sector.

The conference:“The Economist and the Judge: Private Litigation and Damage Assessment in Antitrust and IPRs Cases”, will be held in Rome on the 23rd and 24th of June 2011.
It will explore the role that economists can play in private litigation, with a special focus on cases arising from breaches of competition law and IPRs.
